The Story Star System

What is the Story Star Review system?
The Story Star Standard is a professional and standardized review system designed to highlight high-quality self-published and indie books. Self publishing’s greatest advantage is that anyone can publish, granting authors the creative freedom to defy trends and publish beyond the constraints of traditional publishers.
But self publishing’s greatest advantage is also its greatest flaw. Self-published books have gained an unfortunate reputation for being poor quality, to the point where many readers overlook self-published books completely. Many excellent indie books are buried beneath flashy marketing, trends, or sheer luck.
Our mission is to change that. The Story Star Standard offers a direct quality marker while authors to retain their creative freedom and authorial ownership of their work. Our book catalogue features all our quality-checked indie books, helping readers discover outstanding indie works and restoring confidence in self-published literature. We also aim to champion authors’ hard work and defend human creativity in an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated content. So the question is: how do we judge what counts as a high-quality book?
So how do we judge quality fairly?
Standardised system
We use a standardised system that evaluates a book across seven weighted categories: Narrative Craft (22%), Characters (18%), Prose (18%), Dialogue (13%), World & Atmosphere (12%), Concept & Theme (12%), and Format (5%). For each reviews, we analyse the book across all seven categories and then assign a score from 1 to 5 to each catagory. Finally, we calculate a weighted average to determine whether a star (or more) is awarded.
Reviewers are required to provide a professional and insightful explanation for their reasonings as to why they awarded the score they did for each category, outlining both the books strengths and areas for improvements. These evaluations are shared directly with the author, and every review is required to offer constructive insight and a clear path for development. At the Story Star Standard, we require our reviewers explanations to be clear, fair, and professional.
Professional Reviewers
All of our reviewers are professionals in the craft of writing. Every reviewer is quality checked, and their reviews are regularly reviewed to ensure standardisation and fairness in our star system. Our reviewers are not just readers, they are professions trained specifically to fairly judge your book.

Relaxed & Friendly
Each of the Seven Categories

Narrative Craft (22%)
Plot, Structure, and Pacing
Narrative Craft is the foundation of a book and arguably its most essential element. Beautiful prose or immersive world-building, nearly all of the time, can’t compensate for weak story structure. Our narrative craft category evaluates the strength of the plot: Are story arcs fulfilled? Is the plot satisfying and engaging? Does the plot build clearly and naturally? This category also examines the pacing of individual scenes alongside the broader progression of the story. A strong narrative can often be marked by books that engage readers, delivers satisfying payoffs, and maintains consistent momentum throughout.

Character (18%)
Depth, Emotional Impact, and Purpose
Characters are the beating heart of any story. In this category we examine how convincing, consistent, and purposeful the characters: both as people and as integral parts of the narrative. Do they have depth and purpose? Do they feel like real people with wants and needs and fears? We also look at their relationships, emotional authenticity, and whether the character’s reactions and actions reflect their experiences, backgrounds, and roles within the story.

Prose (18%)
Style, Voice, and Quality of Prose
Prose is what distinguishes literature from other forms of storytelling. It’s the voice and texture of the book. So how do we judge high-quality prose? Some make the mistake of thinking good prose is ornate or “flowery”, however, good prose is purposeful and precise, as well as evocative as we may imagine with more decorative prose. Good prose should also maintain a clear voice, whether that be first person or omniscient third, and be subtle as not to over-explain.

Dialogue (13%)
Realism, Character Voice, and Convincing Delivery
Dialogue is as essential element of story crafting; it reveals character, furthers the plot, and provides subtle emotional weight. So what is good dialogue? Here, we examine good dialogue on its authenticity, emotional depth, subtly, and contribution on the overall narrative.

World & Atmosphere (12%)
World-Building, Setting, and Tone
World and Atmosphere is a broader category than others, that encompasses world-building, setting, and tone. For a fantasy or sci-fi novel, worldbuilding is very easy to define, but every book – from a small contemporary coffee shop drama to a continental scale fantasy epic – must create a convincing sense of place and mood. This category assesses how successfully the author immerses the reader in the world of their story and how well they can craft a tone that supports the narrative.

Concept & Theme (12%)
Originality, Success of Concept, and Theme
The concept and theme are essential parts of a book that are often over looked. This category assesses both the originality of the book’s concept and and the depth and execution of its themes. So what makes strong concepts? Strong concepts may reinvent familiar tropes or bring fresh perspectives to established genres. Well-developed themes meanwhile, should underpin the book with meaning, cohesion, and emotional resonance. A book does not necessarily have to say anything original, after all can any book be truly original nowadays? However, to score highly it should feel fresh to a reader or at least handle the theme with notable depth and precision.

Format (5%)
Punction, Spelling, and Layout
Format is the most objective category and focuses on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and ease of readability, as well as the books structural formatting such as a professional EPUB layout. It’s no surprise that proper formatting improves readers’ experience, while poor formatting can undermine the novel no matter the talent in other categories. We hope this category is one which is easy for authors to score highly on as long as their books are edited and organised.

Brings it together (100%)
Final Score
Once a book has been graded across all 7 categories, these individual scores are weighted and combined to determine the books overall average. Books that are very narrowly on the borderline of a star, such as those achieving a, 2.99 or 3.49, will undergo additional review to ensure that the rating awarded accurately reflects the book’s overall quality.
When the reviewer writes up your review, they must must provide a clear and professional justification for every score assigned. These must be based on our professional rubric and their experienced judgement. These written explanations should also provide insight for the author on both the book’s strengths and areas for growth.
