Human Verification

With A.I. becoming better and better, the craft and love of human made stories risks being drowned out by the speed of which A.I. can produce words.

We want to change that

The Story Star Standard

Protecting Human Craft

A.I threatens to overrun the book sphere, especially indie services such as self-publishing which have no means to work with a person organically like traditional publishing. So how do we solve this?

At the Story Star Standard, every book listed on our catalogue is tested for A.I. content. We ask every author to declare that their book is not generated with A.I., however, we understand that this is very easy to lie about. Because of this, each of our books our tested for A.I. content., from a series of questions to random checks of the manuscript for A.I. content. All books which fail this test, have chances to prove their writing ability in much more rigorous tests, as to prevent false accusations.

But we don’t just want to stop there. Our aim is to offer a rigorous system that all authors can apply to to gain a Human Verified Certificate, so that authors don’t just have to rely on achieving a story star or being featured on our catalogue to achieve this. This certificate is different than just applying on a word of trust. We aim to create a body which can test for human authorship, so both authors and readers can have the piece of mind the work they’re supporting is human made.

This Human Verified Certificate is currently a work in progress and we would love to hear your feedback on how to improve this.

How do we Test For A.I. Content?

Questionnaires

Each of our authors who submit a book for review at the Story Star Standard are require to undergo a brief but thorough questionnaire where they have to explain elements of the book and their writing progress, as well as a very short rewriting element. To an author who human wrote their book, this should be a very easy questionnaire but those who use AI might struggle or achieve very formulaic answers.

For those who are just applying for the Human Authorship Certificate will also answer these questions plus some extra extended questions which aim to be more rigorous. Proof of your writing process will also be required at this stage, although we understand that not every writer has this available to hand, so you may have to undergo a different test instead.

Prose Analysis

In our Story Star Standard, we’re already analysing every book submitted to us in detail to a professional standard. As well as identifying anything suspicious, each work will receive numerous tests with multiple A.I checkers that are well regarded in accuracy.

For those who are just applying just for the Human Authorship Certificate, you will be asked to submit multiple pieces of work to us to be reviewed for A.I. content. This will be analysed with the same professional eye as work submitted to us for Story Stars, and will be tested numerous times with A.I. checkers along with our own professional opinion.

What if you Fail the tests and the case of false positives?

We fully acknowledge false positives, especially with A.I. checkers, and rest assured this is just one of our many methods of checking for A.I., with our emphasis placed on both the questionnaire and the prose generally. However, if you fail all this tests, or we are unsure, you may be asked to complete more questionnaires, writing trials, and proof of your writing progress. If you fail these and believe our analysis to be incorrect and still want to proceed with our A.I. checking, you may be able to undergo more involved tests, such as interviews, video recordings, and timed assessments.

Human Authorship Certificate

A permeant Author Certificate

A permeant digital certificate you can place on your website, book cover, and advertisement which states firmly that you have passed our assessment process and are a human author. You do not need to submit your book for story stars, or if you’ve submitted your book and not received a star this doesn’t matter, this is a separate more rigorous process for human authored confirmation that aims to prove the author is human authored.

Tests

You will undergo tests from questionnaires about your creative writing and be asked to submit an extract or short story associated with the questions to be reviewed. You will also be asked to complete a short written piece, this piece doesn’t have to be any good! just authentic.

Chances to Prove yourself if labeled falsely

If you were flagged falsely for A.I., which we hope will be very minimally done, you can undergo further tests to disapprove this.

Let us Know Your Opinions

We hope to launch this service for willing authors in the coming weeks. We aim to gather the opinions of experts, researchers, authors, and the wider community to balance rigour and the impractical to develop a service authors and readers can use to distinguish a work as human made.
