For a long time, as a young and avid reader, I was convinced that self-published books had little to offer. At best, I thought if high-quality self-published books did exist, they were like finding a needle in a haystack. But years later, as I sat in my (metaphorical) pile of manuscripts sent to me by indie authors, it occurred to me just how wrong my assumption was.
Many of these manuscripts were incredibly captivating, and some were even extraordinary: matching or sometimes surpassing a lot of well-regarded traditionally published titles. Out of all the manuscripts sent to me, I would say only around 15% of them I disliked reading. And yet, when I put on my “reader brain”, the words self-published triggered the old doubts: Is this going to be worth reading?
That disconnect is where The Story Star Standard began.
The Publishing Landscape Has Changed, and Not Always for the Better.
When an author finishes writing their book there are three main choices available: traditional publishing, self-publishing, or vanity/hybrid publishing. Vanity/hybrid publishing has faced a lot of issues in itself that I won’t explore here, so that leaves us with traditional and self-publishing.
Traditional publishing is often seen as the ‘correct’ path, both within the writing industry and those outside of it who might only view a book as successful if it’s traditionally published. But the path of traditional publishing isn’t as appealing as it once was. The statistics, especially for debut authors, are a bleak figure: 95% of the manuscripts submitted to agents are instantly rejected for being poorly written, have a poor premise, or are said to be ‘irrelevant’. Of the remaining 5% of high-quality manuscripts, most are still rejected due to timing, similar titles on an agent’s list, or the current state of the market. But getting an agent isn’t the end to rejection, the popular industry statistic is that between 1-2% of manuscripts that a publisher receives are accepted. In other words, they accept one or two out of every hundred manuscripts they receive. This works out as a 0.01% chance or a 1 in 10,000 if we combine both the agent and publisher rejection rate. Even if we take the statistic of a 10% chance of a publisher accepting your manuscript, due to the fact agents will send out your manuscript to multiple publishers, the odds are still bleak at 0.1% or 1 in 1,000. (statistics collated by Natalie Harris-Spencer)
And even if you are part of that 0.1% who get published, debut authors often face low advances, minimal creative control, and must contend with the low royalties of traditional publishing. And if you’re first book isn’t successful, a publisher is unlikely to take you on again.
So, it’s no surprise that many turn to self-publishing. But self-publishing faces its own challenges. More than 2.6 million books were published in 2023 and this is before the true boom of A.I. generated content which is now churning out books at an alarming rate. The average self-publishing books sells 250 copies and 90% of self-published books sell less than 100 copies. But this isn’t because all 90% of these books are low-quality, many high-quality books are out there but struggle to get in front of readers at all.
With A.I. generated content only making the trajectory of the ‘self-publishing slushpile’ even worse as each year passes, it seems as traditional publishing may become the only viable system again. Both readers and authors lose from the growing slushpile of generated and low-quality titles. Something needs to change, but what?
The Story Star Standard
This is where The Story Star Standard comes in: a service that exists to promote indie books based on quality, not marketing budgets, algorithms, or sheer luck.
At our core, we are a professional review service built by professionals in the book industry who wants to create a space where high-quality indie books can shine with all the creative freedom self-publishing grants the author. We evaluate books through a clear, criteria-based system designed to be as fair and objective as possible. Books that achieve a certain level of quality will be listed permanently on our book catalogue of indie books for readers to browse.
And importantly:
We do not accept A.I. generated books.
Every book in our catalogue is human-written and quality-checked.
How Story Stars work
Every book is evaluated across seven key criteria, each weighed by its importance in the craft of storytelling:
- Narrative Craft (22%) – Structure, pacing, and plot development.
- Prose (18%) – Clarity, style, voice, and readability
- Character (18%) – Depth, consistency, and emotional impact
- Dialogue (13%) – Voice, realism, and flow.
- World & Atmosphere (12%) – Setting, tone, and immersion.
- Concept & Theme (12%) – Originality, thematic depth, and genre expectations.
- Format (5%) – Grammar, layout, and technical polish.
These scores are averaged into a final result and translated into Story Stars:
- 0 Stars – A Book that Hasn’t Met our Quality Markers – A book that hasn’t met the quality we’d expect. The author will receive a report highlighting why and how they may improve.
- 1 star – A Story of Promise – A commendable work, that perhaps could use a bit of development but is still thoroughly enjoyable and worth highlighting in the indie marketplace.
- 2 Stars – A Story We Confidently Recommend – A solid book with engaging execution, well-crafted storytelling, and memorable elements.
- 3 Stars – A Story Worth Celebrating – A book of exceptional quality that rises above most indie works.
- 4 Stars – A Story Worth Remembering Forever – Awarded rarely. This book is a masterclass in storytelling: among the best of the best.
- 5 Stars – An Impossible Masterpiece – Requires a perfect score in every category, which we think may be impossible but we’re happy to read something that proves us wrong!
Most authors who are awarded a star will receive between 1-3 stars, all of which are an achievement. Not everyone will earn a star, as to provide to our readers a certain quality in our book catalogue, and to fulfil our mission of showcasing great indie works.
Every book that earns a story star will be permanently listed in our public book catalogue, which is a curated space where readers can finally browse high-quality indie books without shifting through a sea of A.I. or low-effort tiles.
But Why Get A Professional Review?
Whilst reader review are still valuable, using them to mark quality causes several problems. A common problem is that readers’ reviews are frequently inflated, especially for indie books which carry a universal expectation to leave a 5 star else the author will be punished by the algorithm. These reviews are also inconsistent and are based heavily on the reader’s taste rather than the merits of the book’s craft. And finally, in the case of indie publishing, a single malicious review can damage the success of a book.
Another issue when just relying on readers’ reviews in the case of the author, is that reader ratings rarely offer meaningful guidance. It can be difficult just from a reader’s review why people liked or disliked the book beyond vague things mentioned by the reader.
A professional review at The Story Star Standard seeks to counter all these points: in our fair criteria system, no review is inflated nor inconsistent. We judge based on merits of the craft rather than personal taste, and importantly our reviews offer meaningful guidance to the author.
By submitting your book to The Story Star Standard, you receive:
- A clear score for each of the seven categories.
- A written breakdown justifying why we have given this category the score it has.
- Professional analysis of what works and what doesn’t based on the seven core craft categories.
- A marketable tagline.
- A polished review paragraph for prospective readers.
Even if a book doesn’t receive a star, the author will still receive the full professional report, which contains actionable feedback in each category to help them improve.
Our Anti-A.I. Commitment
As mentioned before, A.I. poses one of the biggest threats to the integrity and viability of the indie publishing market. Readers deserve to know what they’re reading. Human authors deserve a space not drowned out by generated content.
At The Story Star Standard, not only do we guarantee that no A.I. generated books are allowed on our catalogue, we have also created the A.I. Verification Badge. This is a long-term optional badge authors can earn through assessment, which they then can display to show their human authored. This badge is a work in progress so we’d love to hear feedback on it.
Our Mission
The Story Star Standard was created to help amend some of the problems in the self-publishing marketplace. Our mission statements are:
- To provide a space for indie authors to have their work highlighted and shared.
- To restore readers’ trust in self-published books.
- To highlight high-quality books that deserve attention.
- To celebrate creativity outside the market restrictions of traditional publishing.
- To provide a space for readers to discover vetted, high-quality books with ease.
The Story Star Standard isn’t created to gatekeep. Anyone, with a book of any quality, can self-publish and they should. But readers deserve guidance on how to find high-quality indie books, and talented indie authors deserve to be seen more than they currently are.
Interested in Getting Your Book Reviewed?
We’re currently at the beginning of our journey, and to celebrate our launch we’re offering Early Bird pricing of 50% off, which you can find here.
Because of the considerable experience needed by professionals and the amount of work involved in providing a review – reading the full book, analysing it across seven categories, writing a detailed report, and determining the star rating – our reviews are paid. However, even at full price, we aim to remain as affordable as possible, while still paying our reviewers fairly for their time and expertise.
If you’re interested in getting your book reviewed and possibly added to our catalogue, head to the Review Your Book section. If you’re a reader and want to support high-quality indie books, feel free to share this with authors you believe deserve recognition.
